To call Kirby a legendary creator would be severely understating it: In his time at Marvel, and its precursor Timely Comics, he was responsible for co-creating Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther and helping to lay the foundations of the entire Marvel Universe. In order to answer that question, we have to go back to 1970, the year Jack Kirby parted ways with Marvel Comics. The second is that, even for long-time comics fans, the Eternals are the kind of characters that prompt the question: Who are they, again? The answers are, as you may expect from the trailers for the movie version, strange. The first is that these characters are built around a concept which could rewrite everything we know about the MCU. It’s a bold move - even for a studio that has previously taken risks on properties like the Guardians of the Galaxy - for two reasons. Alongside the more earthbound Shang-Chi and the time-loopy Loki, November’s Eternals helps the mega-franchise take a major jump toward the cosmic. In 2019, Spider-Man: Far From Home brought the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 3 to a close, and the fog lifted on what Marvel planned to do next.

Creed finds them in an old folk's rest home".įirst published in 1990, Creed brought along a character, Joe Creed, who you neither loved or hated.you merely sympathized. Their powers are waning, the centuries and the evil they have perpetrated have taken their toll. Creed eventually discovers his antagonists are the Fallen Angels of Europe, whose origins can be traced to Biblical sources. The person he has photographed bears a remarkable resemblance to a man hanged in the 1930s for murder and the mutilation of children. Creed himself is observed and there follows a series of horrific events designed to intimidate him into handing over the film. After the funeral ceremony of a major Hollywood actress, he photographs a man of ravaged appearance desecrating the grave. He looks a little like the actor Mickey Rourke (and is aware of it). He's a coward, a liar and a would-be blackmailer. Creed, himself, is a sleaze of the first order, but good at his job nothing will stop him getting the right shot. "Joseph Creed is a paparazzo, one of that un-illustrious band of photographers whose sole purpose in life is to chase and harass celebrities for candid shots, preferably of the seedier kind. He’s allied with Loki, God of Mischief, at the time blind, but Loki doesn’t trust Dormammu’s promise that the eye will be used to restore his sight, and so approaches the Avengers. What Strange doesn’t know, is that he’d been subtly influenced by old foe Dormammu, who wants the Evil Eye for his own purposes. Since its last use, segments of the Evil Eye had been scattered around the globe, and would require retrieving. An earlier Defenders episode had seen the Black Knight, once an Avenger, transformed to stone, and Doctor Strange believed the power of a mystical device called the Evil Eye could reverse this condition as his spells had failed. He wrote both super-team titles at the time, and deftly manoeuvred Hawkeye from the Avengers to the Defenders to make up their numbers and add some spice to the forthcoming confrontation. Has Steve Englehart ever considered in later years what he’d given birth to when he suggested the idea as a fun event as there were to be no summer annuals in 1973? In terms of superhero comics at least, the Avengers/Defenders war has a significance as the first crossover between Marvel titles running for several issues. The Bean Trees begins when Taylor (whose real name is Marietta) decides that it's time to leave Pittman, Kentucky, where she lives with her mother, and make something of herself. The relationship that develops between Taylor and Lou Ann becomes a focus of the novel. Kingsolver wrote Chapters 2 and 4 in limited third person (we see the character through the author's eyes rather than through the character's), presenting information as seen and understood by Lou Ann Ruiz, a significant character in the novel. All but two chapters of the novel are written in the first person, revealing the thoughts and feelings of the feisty protagonist, Taylor Greer. Barbara Kingsolver wrote The Bean Trees in shifting points of view. But his anger is soon redirected when he learns she has been lying to him. When he learns that she lost her voice from a beating by a cruel former master, he is outraged. Wesley le Wyse is intrigued by the beautiful new servant girl. But she cannot reveal her true identity for fear she will be forced to return to the castle. Evangeline soon regrets the charade as she gets to know Wesley, the handsome young leader of the servants, whom she later discovers is the son of a wealthy lord. To keep her identity a secret, Evangeline pretends to be mute. Desperate to escape a life married to a man she finds revolting, Evangeline runs away from the king and joins a small band of servants on their way back to their home village. But the young king betroths her to his closest advisor, Lord Shiveley, a man twice as old as Evangeline. The Silent Songbird #7, Fairy Tale Romance series, By Melanie DickersonĮvangeline is the ward and cousin of King Richard II, yet she dreams of a life outside of Berkhamsted Castle, where she might be free to marry for love and not an arranged marriage. Aubrey continues to love Iris over the years, but she grows distant and finds love in Ohio. Her decision to leave permanently scars both Aubrey and Melody. After healing from childbirth, Iris moves to Ohio for college, leaving Aubrey and Melody behind and finding freedom in being away from home. While Aubrey enjoys his role as a father, Iris finds the pressure unrelenting. Iris struggles to maintain a connection to her child. Eventually, they both learn they could never control their daughter. Her and Po’Boy worked extremely hard and sacrificed so much that they initially perceive Iris’s pregnancy as the undoing of their accomplishments. Sabe, who is born to a family with a direct connection to the Tulsa Massacre, carries the dark heirlooms of trauma into her habits and relationship to her daughter. Melody is the product of teenage pregnancy, her inception binding Iris and Aubrey together despite their stark difference in class. The house is filled with friends and family, and the narrative jumps between Melody, her parents Iris and Aubrey, and her grandparents Sabe and Po’Boy as they offer poetic vignettes from their lives, each contributing to the realization of this moment. It is Melody’s 16th birthday party, and she is participating in her ceremony-a family tradition developed from years of cotillions. The novel opens 80 years to the day of the Tulsa Massacre, a violent two-day incident, where White people attack Black people, inside the Brooklyn Brownstone home of Melody’s grandparents. Despite the fact that the literal President of the United States was currently staying there, David Morrell was the one the hotel staff decided to place inside the Presidential Suite Bill Clinton stayed in the second-best room, the suite usually left for authors. The flag that maybe things weren’t exactly as they seemed was that Morrell was visiting Poland at the same time as then-President Bill Clinton, and they happened to be staying in the same hotel. And he didn’t actually learn about Rambo’s involvement in the dismantling of the Soviet Union until about fifteen-or-so-years after the initial Rambo adaptation was released.Īt Thrillerfest this past weekend, Morrell recounted the story of how Rambo‘s influence in Poland came to his attention.ĭuring the early 2000’s, Morrell was visiting Poland on a book tour and noticed straight away that he was being treated, well, differently… Now, Morrell (AKA: Rambo’s Father) hadn’t actually set-out to achieve something so historic he never could’ve known the power his words might hold while he was putting them on the page. You may already know all about David Morrell, the legendary bestselling author of First Blood(the 1972 novel that the entire Rambofranchise is based on.) What you may not know, however, is that Rambo actually had a pretty big part in dissolving the USSR.ĭavid Morrell and Sylvester Stallone | Image via IMDB For some readers, this may be where catharsis lies either because their own parents did or didn’t make it that far.Įither way, I was reminded of a moment in Christina C. The mother’s prejudice against her daughter’s homosexuality as a symbol of her rejection of “a good, normal life” as rewarded by Korean culture is difficult to read and really the only thing that made me stick it out was knowing from the get-go - it’s in the blurb, possibly for exactly this reason - that she’s going to grow past it. I’ve talked about the latter elsewhere it’s definitely not light reading. Recently I’ve been very taken with My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite and Concerning My Daughter by Kim Hye-Jin. I can hardly believe that these words that had sunk deep inside me are surfacing and coming out through my own lips rather than resting heavily all the way to my grave. |
