Oskar spends much of his time plotting revenge against his tormentors and obsessing over newspaper clippings about murders and violent crimes. He’s bullied by his classmates, particularly a gang led by Conny (Patrik Rydmark), his mother has little time for him and his estranged father is more interested in his new lover than his son. Taking its title from an arcane bit of vampire lore that often gets ignored as it might get in the way of the story, that vampires need to be invited into the homes of potential victims, Tomas Alfredson’s extraordinary film, based on a 2004 novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, is as much a very strange love story as it is a horror film and is one of the finest of all post-Millennial vampire films.ġ2-year-old Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) lives with his distant and cold mother Yvonne in an anonymous Stockholm suburb in the early 1980s.
